WAPPINGERS FALLS – Sudipta Kumar Ray, age 72, an area resident since 1980 and formerly of Charlottesville, VA, died peacefully on July 27, 2023 at his home surrounded by his family.

Sudipta received his BSc in Physics from Presidency College, University of Calcutta in 1970; his MSc in Physics from Delhi University in 1973; and his PhD in Solid State Physics from the University of Virginia in 1979. It was at UVa where he met a fellow graduate student who would become his future wife of 45 years, Ruth Gabriel, at a Halloween party at the International Students Club.

Sudipta led a full and fulfilling life in the United States. He was employed by IBM East Fishkill in management and technical roles in microelectronics packaging for 33 years, retiring in 2012. He was recognized as an IBM Master Inventor, with 70 patents to his credit.

He had been a member of the American Physical Society, a Senior Member of IEEE, and had been an active member of the Electronic Packaging Committee for Electronic Components and Technology Conference. He instilled his love of education, science, and hard work in his children, and was proud of their academic and professional achievements.

Sudipta was a member of the Hindu Samaj Temple in Wappingers Falls. He had a deep respect for the Bengali language and his Indian heritage. He enjoyed sharing Bengali nursery rhymes with his children and grandchildren and telling them stories from the Hindu epics.

An avid traveler, he especially enjoyed a rafting trip in the Grand Canyon, tours of China and South Africa, visits to Las Vegas, and several cruises with family and friends. He loved spending time outdoors, engaged in his favorite hobbies of hiking and fly fishing. He enjoyed playing golf, and in his younger days, skiing. In his retirement years, he relaxed by playing bridge online, and taking classes at Marist College's Center for Lifetime Study.

Sudipta was always current on politics and financial news. He was always ready for a discussion, and most importantly, solving the problems of the world with the "Brain Trust" at their Friday lunches. He also enjoyed many trips with his friends to Yankee Stadium to watch the Yankees games in the summer.

On August 27,1978 at the Blair Mill Inn in Horsham, PA, Sudipta married Ruth Gabriel who survives at home.
