EAST FISHKILL – Sven A. Nordlund, 90, a resident of East Fishkill since 1952 and formerly of the Bronx, died on Friday, February 18, 2011 at the Wingate at Dutchess.
Born in Aland, Finland on August 21, 1920, he was the son of Ragnar A. and Agda Mansen Nordlund. He served in the US Army as a Staff Sergeant during World War II in the South Pacific and was awarded the Bronze Star.
He was employed as a carpenter with Local 203/19 in Poughkeepsie until his retirement in 1992. He had also served as the Building Inspector and Zoning Administrator for the Town of East Fishkill for many years. Sven was a life member and past president of the New York State Building Officials and a life member of the New Hamburg Yacht Club.
Sven was a member of the Hopewell Reformed Church. A former chief for the East Fishkill Fire District, he was a founding member of the Hillside Lake Fire Company #3 where he also served as Assistant Chief. He was a Deputy Fire Coordinator for the Dutchess County Bureau of Fire for 25 years, as well as a Charter Member of the Hughsonville and Chelsea Fire Departments.
On May 23, 1942 in Jersey City, Sven married Gertrude Linnea Johnson who predeceased him on August 12, 2009. He is survived by his daughter, Christine Stammer and her husband Donald of Hopewell Junction; his grandchildren, Judson LaLonde and his wife Zoe of Millburn, NJ, Kirsten Stammer of Queens, Kimberly Stammer of New York and Christopher Stammer of Arlington, VA; and his great-grandchildren, Finlay and Oliver LaLonde.
Calling hours will be on Sunday from 2 to 5 p.m. at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The members of the East Fishkill Fire District will conduct a service at 3 p.m. The burial will be private.
