Obituary

Thomas Joseph Hourican, Jr., 78, an area resident since 1982 and formerly of Mahopac and Yonkers, died on Tuesday, July 6, 2010 at St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie.
Born on December 8, 1931 in Mount Vernon, he was the son of the late Thomas Joseph Hourican, Sr. and Mildred Junion Bellion. He proudly served our country in the US Navy aboard the USS Mount Olympus during the Korean War then worked as a locomotive fireman for the New York Central Railroad. He was then employed as a firefighter (Badge #190) for the City of Yonkers for more than 20 years until his retirement in 1980 while also working fulltime for the United States Postal Service in Mahopac and Hopewell Junction as a mail carrier and clerk. Following his second retirement, he continued to work as the courtesy shuttle driver for Healey Brothers in Beacon. He was a member of the Mission Church in Holmes and enjoyed railroading, history and most of all his family.
On August 22, 1953 at St. John the Baptist Church in Yonkers, Thomas married Florence O'Neill who survives at home. He is also survived by his daughters, Sharyn Pratt and her husband Curt of Carmel, Theresa Kraft and Roger Owen Jr. of Beacon and Kathleen Pritz and her fiancé Bryan McNair of Bethel, CT; his brother, Brian Hourican of CA; his grandchildren, Bryan Pratt, Marissa Pratt, Brittany Hyatt, Scott Pratt, Kyle Pritz, Austin Pritz and Chelsea Owen-Kraft; and his great-grandson Justin Hyatt Jr. He was predeceased by his brother, Clement Hourican.
Calling hours will be held on Friday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. The funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Gregg Johnson officiating. Interment will be at the convenience of the family in Rose Hills Memorial Park in Putnam Valley.
