Thomas Kevin Scanlon, 85, a resident of Dutchess County for 45 years, passed away peacefully at the Montrose VA Hospital on February 20, 2017.
Tom was born on July 30, 1931 in County Clare, Ireland, to the late Sinon and Susan Scanlon. He was one of 10 children.
He immigrated to the USA in 1953 and served proudly and honorably in the United States Army from 1953-1955. As an immigrant, Tom was so proud to be an American!
On February 27, 1960, Tom married the former Mary Dunne, who resides at home. In 1972, Tom and Mary, along with their children, moved to Hopewell Junction.
In 1977, Tom and Mary purchased the Wiccopee General Store in East Fishkill, NY. They, along with their family, operated their successful business for 36 years. Tom spent his happiest and most enjoyable years at his deli, meeting new friends and welcoming old ones.
Tom was also formerly employed as a bus driver for the Wappingers Central School District. He retired from WCSD in 1992.
Tom was a parishioner of St. Denis Church and a member of St. Mary's Council #4065, Knights of Columbus.
In addition to his wife Mary, Tom is survived by his children, son Michael and his fiancée Karen; son Brian; daughter, Maura and her husband Robert Crane; his daughter Rose; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brothers in Ireland, Sino (wife Margaret), Vincent (wife Eve), and Patrick (wife Ann). He is predeceased by his son, Kevin (October 2011); his three sisters, Mary Hedges, Delia Rouine, Chrissy McCloskey; brothers Martin, Michael, and Daniel; and numerous nieces and nephews in England, Ireland and the USA.
Visitation will be Friday, February 24, from 4-8 pm at McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Saturday, February 25, at 11am at St. Denis Church, 602 Beekman Road, Hopewell Junction, NY. Interment will follow at the St. Denis Cemetery with full military honors.
