Obituary

Walter Stevens Stawaris, a resident of Wappingers Falls, New York since 1979 and previously of New York City and Yonkers, passed away peacefully surrounded by love at his home on January 31, 2026 after a long illness fought with courage, dignity and grace.

Walter was born on February 15, 1942 in Newport News, Virginia while his father was serving in the United States Army. He was the son of Walter and Margaret (McGuire) Stawaris. His family later moved to New York City where Walter received his early years of education.

Walter proudly served in the United States Marine Corps. His tour of duty was from 1959 to 1963. Following his Honorable Discharge, Walter returned to New York City and pursued his education at Fordham University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Business degree. It was during his time in college where he met the love of his life, Juliette Giannone.

While attending Fordham University, Walter was employed by International Paper Company coordinating sales with manufacturing. After graduating, he accepted a management position at St. Regis Paper Company. Many years later until his retirement, Walter was a Fulfillment Manager of Operations for The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

On December 16, 1972 Walter married Juliette, who survives at home. Walter is survived by his son, Walter H. Stawaris and wife, Colleen M. Stawaris (Ryan), and his daughter, Vanessa J. Alfonse (Stawaris) and husband, Brian A. Alfonse and his cherished granddaughters, Victoria T. Stawaris, Olivia J. Alfonse and Alexandra L. Alfonse. Walter is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Michele V. Gorshoff and Deborah R. Mahoney and many nieces and nephews.

A private man by nature, Walter found true contentment in the quiet comforts of home. He was a man of simple but meaningful pleasures. Walter was an avid reader. You would always find reading material by his side. He enjoyed playing chess against the computer or a family member, appreciating both its challenge and quiet discipline. His deep appreciation for animals and the natural world was evident in his fondness for wildlife programs, and his affection for family pets. You would find him watching his favorite football team on Sundays. Walter especially looked forward to visits with his children and granddaughters, taking immense pride in their accomplishments. Some of his happiest moments were made during wonderful family vacations at the seashore.

Walter will be remembered for his quiet strength, his devotion to family, his sharp wit, his one-of-a-kind humor, and the steady presence he brought to his family.

Walter lived by the Marine Corps' motto: "Semper Fidelis" Always Faithful.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at a later date.
