Warren
Askland
September 30, 1936 – October 22, 2024
Warren William Askland, 88, an area resident since 1970, died on October 22, 2024, at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.
Born in the Bronx on September 30, 1936, he was the son of Louis Omund and Madeleine (Warren) Askland. He was a graduate of Cardinal Hayes High School, served in the Air Force, and worked at the Brooklyn Navy Yard as a draftsman. He was later employed by IBM, East Fishkill as an electrical engineer while he simultaneously obtained his electrical engineering degree at Union College.
Warren was a devoted parishioner of St. Columba Church and was a member of St. Mary's Council #4065, Knights of Columbus.
While a student at Cardinal Hayes, Warren further developed his passion for baseball and later played semi-pro ball as a pitcher in the Air Force. As a family man, he continued playing, though in the softball league at IBM, and later in area Senior Men's Softball Leagues through his 70's.
He regularly attended the senior exercise and painting classes at the East Fishkill Community Center and enjoyed listening to music, and hobbies such as photography and electronic tinkering.
He was a devoted husband and father and married to his wife, Grace, for 64 years. He was predeceased by Grace, and daughters Kathleen Askland and Darlene Andrew; his granddaughter, Ingrid Place; and his brothers Andrew, Charlie, and Edmund Askland. He is survived by daughters Denise Place and Donna Rickman, his grandsons, Elliott Place and Kevin Place; and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 4-7pm at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Jct., The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday, at 10:00am at St. Columba Church, 835 Route 82, Hopewell Jct.,
followed by interment in St. Denis Cemetery.
Memorial donations may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Covenant House, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, or the Red Cross.
