William Floyd Smelcer, a resident of Fishkill since 2003, formerly of Peekskill, passed away suddenly at home on Friday, August 28, 2026. He was 77.
Son of the late Floyd and Phyllis (Stocking) Smelcer, he was born in Rochelle, IL on November 3, 1948. In 1968, he enlisted in the US Army and served until he was honorably discharged in 1977. He was the recipient of several recognitions including the National Defense Service and Good Conduct medals. William was proud to have served aboard the MH-1A Sturgis, the army's first floating nuclear power plant, where he received training as a nuclear reactor operator. Following his military service, he dedicated his career as a plant operator for Indian Point Energy Center, retiring in 2000.
On April 23, 1983, he married Hildegard LaSorsa in Peekskill. She survives at home in Fishkill.
In addition to his wife, William is also survived by many loving family members and dear friends.
