Zafiria Toscano, age 85, passed away at home with her daughter, Francesca, by her side on September 2, 2022. Born on February 10, 1937, in Athens, Greece to parents Dimitris and Theodora Spanoudis. She survived WWII and shortly after that the Greek Civil War.

After graduating high school, Zafiria went on to study Political Science, however, circumstances had her take a test for a scholarship being offered which took her to Switzerland to study Business and Hotel Management. Upon graduation, she was hired by the 5-star King George in Athens as a Floor Manager. A year later, she was invited and accepted to work as Director of Public Relations and Programs for a New York-based Greek cruise line on the TSS Olympia. During her time on the Olympia, she met and married her former husband, Gaetano Toscano. This marriage took her to Canada and then finally to Cold Spring, NY where they settled down to raise a family.

Zafiria is survived by her daughter Francesca Toscano Bernhardt, her spouse Helge Bernhardt, and her son Alfio Toscano, his former spouse Lisa Russell Toscano and their children Ciana Josephine and Dimitri Matteo, as well as her sister Anastasia Spanoudis Tzamali, her spouse Foti Tzamali, and her nieces Aggeliki and Dora.

Calling hours will be Saturday, September 10, 2022 from 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm with a service at 4:30pm at the McHoul Funeral Home of Fishkill, Inc., 1089 Main Street, Fishkill, NY.
