Obituary for Helen R. Phelan

Helen R. Phelan, a four time cancer survivor, succumbed to heart disease after a short hospital stay on October 11, 2017.

Born on January 8, 1921 in NYC, Helen was one of eight children born to Giovanni and Carmella Vaccaro. She married James E. McClintock in 1950 and was widowed in 1970. In 1973, she married John T. Phelan who died in 2000.

Helen is survived by her children, James McClintock Jr., Jane George, Stephen McClintock and his wife Susan, and Michael Phelan and his wife Aileen; her grandchildren: Chris & Carol George, SheriAnn & Dave Oakes, Anthony & Stephanie George, SamanthaLeigh George, Melissa & Lee Williamson, Chris & Jaime Taylor, James McClintock III, Shannon McClintock, Mitchell Phelan, Marla Phelan, Megan Phelan, Tara Phelan, John-Charles Phelan, David Hunt, Craig Hunt; and her great-grandchildren: Christina, Adrianna & Joseph Oakes, Christopher, Sean & Rodel George, Dylan Taylor, Kenzie Williamson, and Savannah Taylor. She was predeceased by her children, John, Kevin and Colleen Phelan, and her son-in-law, Artie George.

Helen worked for Hiram Walker Liquor Distributors and for Reader’s Digest Large Print Division. She moved to Hopewell Junction from Katonah in 2000. She was active at the Senior Citizens Center in Hopewell Junction for 17 years, served as an elections inspector, and was a huge NY Yankees fan. She enjoyed reading, doing word puzzles and arts and crafts projects, and playing bingo and card games.

Calling hours will be held at the McHoul Funeral Home, Inc., 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction on Saturday and Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday at 10am at St. Columba Church, 835 Route 82, Hopewell Junction followed by interment in St. Denis Cemetery.
