Dorothy Stewart Cranston passed away peacefully in the early hours, Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at the Yorktown Rehabilitation Center. She was 97 years young. She is survived by her sons, Thomas and Clinton, her daughter-in-laws, Terri and Michelle, and her grandchildren, Ross and his wife Rebecca, Brad and Jay. Her first great-child is expected in February 2021.
Dot or Dollie, as she was fondly called by many, was born May 26, 1923 in Gartnaneane, County Cavan, Ireland. She was the ninth child of 13; one brother, Tom Stewart, survives. She immigrated to the US at 24 and trained as a nurse. She married Thomas Cranston, another County Cavan native, in 1953, then settled and raised her family in the Parkchester area of the Bronx amongst family and many friends. Thomas predeceased his wife in 1986. Late in life she left the Bronx to live with Clinton and Michelle in Poughquag, NY.
Dot will be remembered best for her selfless nature, a woman who always thought of others first. She “nursed” professionally and personally; always present when a helping hand was needed. Dot loved dancing, singing, Irish music, gardening and the love of her dogs. She was a hub in our family, staying in touch, traveling and visiting relatives. Dot, her love, positivity, and never ending well of stories will be greatly missed by her family, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
A wake will be held Monday, January 18, 2-4:00pm and 6-8:00pm, at McHoul Funeral Home, 895 Route 82, Hopewell Junction, NY. Followed by interment Tuesday, January 19, 11:30am at Woodlawn Cemetery, 4199 Webster Ave, Bronx, NY. Due to COVID, events will be live streamed, see the link below. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Dutchess County SPCA, 636 Violet Avenue, Hyde Park, New York 12578.
We encourage you to share your most beloved memories of Dorothy here, so that the family and other loved ones can always see it. You can upload cherished photographs, or share your favorite stories, and can even comment on those shared by others.
