My Dear American Dad,
I feel blessed to have met you considering I live in Canada. The internet connected me to your dear son Bill. I admire Bill's faith, manners, and integrity all of which were taught by his parents. Greg, you made me feel instantaneously welcomed in your home, and part of your family. You thought of me as your daughter, and you have taught me things my own father never did. I particularly remember, which has helped me deal with difficult co-workers, is how it is better to beg for forgiveness than ask permission. "Dad" you were always so precise with your words, and that has greatly improved my communication; both written and oral. I immediately sensed your warmth, love, care, kindness, gentleness, integrity, and politeness when we met at the Shrine of Divine Mercy in Stockbridge MA on Divine Mercy weekend in 2009. That only intensified during our visits in New York and New Jersey. I will be forever grateful to you as you gave me a sense of peace in my heart after years of feeling ambiguous regarding my religious vocation. I was looking for a spiritual director, and God sent me the most honest, sincere, and knowledgeable person. I have saved many of our email correspondences, and your writing called The Perfect Cross, and Prayer after Communion. I have a picture of you, Ann, and Bill taken on Bill’s birthday in 2010 hanging on my bedroom wall. Memories of you are in my heart, binders, email folders, prayer books, photo frames, and albums. Thoughts of you radiate such happiness, joy, and gratitude that our paths crossed. You remind me of many great saints; St. Francis of Assisi's love for animals, and of course we both admired St. Therese of Lisieux's "little way". I have tears of sadness “Dad” that I will not be able to as your continued wisdom, knowledge, and insight on my future decisions, but you will be forever in my thoughts, and prayers. Instead I will turn to prayer asking your intercession as I believe you will continue to spend your time in Heaven doing good on earth like St. Therese. In my future conversations with Bill I will always try to guide him in ways you would have, and Bill and I will ask each other ‘What would Dad do”? Love Your Canadian Daughter.
